{"id":155,"date":"2018-03-30T15:10:51","date_gmt":"2018-03-30T13:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/?p=155"},"modified":"2018-03-30T15:10:51","modified_gmt":"2018-03-30T13:10:51","slug":"re-linking-an-office-365-2016-2013-installation-to-a-new-user","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/?p=155","title":{"rendered":"Re-linking an Office 365\/2016\/2013 installation to a new user"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Disaster strikes !<\/h2>\n<p>You company has lost an employee and his or her computer gets transferred to a new colleague, who&#8217;s freshly hired.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_156\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-156 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hello-have-you-wiaiqa-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hello, IT ?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When your lazy-mode kicks in as an IT implementor, you&#8217;re probably gonna go and rename the old account in the Office 365 portal and go on with ordinary life as a sysadmin.<br \/>\nHowever, this will bring some new issues to the table.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The user will still be named as the old user in the internal database of O365<\/li>\n<li>Here and there, references to the old name will still appear in the web portal, as well as in the &#8216;edited by&#8217; properties of Office documents.<\/li>\n<li>Your physical install of Office will still refer to the old user and will ask for reactivation, which will not work.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230; (which is short for &#8220;I can&#8217;t think of anything else, but I&#8217;m sure there is more&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having been told I should be less agressive, I&#8217;ll try to go towards a passive agressive mode and say &#8220;this is what I suggest you should do&#8221; instead of &#8220;now do this&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The general idea here is to convert the old mailbox (if there is any, this depends on the O365 subscription) to a shared mailbox, wait for the actual conversion to be done (<strong>this is an incredibly important part which is overlooked often<\/strong>) and then take away the e-mail-holding license (Plan 1, Business Premium, E3, E5, &#8230;) from that user.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/convert-a-user-mailbox-to-a-shared-mailbox-2e122487-e1f5-4f26-ba41-5689249d93ba\">The detailed explanation on how to do that<\/a>, is not relevant to this post, right now.<br \/>\nAfterwards, create the new user and add the license.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What IS relevant, is the removal of the old license on the computer that remains behind and is passed on to the new user.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A couple of steps need to be taken in order to clean up the installation, so it can be re-linked to a new O365 user.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ee624350.aspx#section1\">Office Software Protection Platform<\/a> script to remove the license from the computer.<\/strong><br \/>\nTo remove the Office 365 license, you must run two cscript command lines. The command lines are:<\/p>\n<p>A. Run<strong>\u00a0C:\\program files &lt;x86&gt;\\Microsoft office\\office15&gt;cscript ospp.vbs \/dstatus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The above command line will generate a report of the currently installed\/activated license.\u00a0<strong><u>(See Below)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-158\" src=\"http:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1.jpg 644w, https:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1-300x134.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE:\u00a0You\u00a0might see multiple licenses in the \/dstatus report.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>B. Make note of value for\u00a0\u201c<strong>Last 5 characters of installed product key\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C. \u00a0Run<strong>\u00a0C:\\program files &lt;x86&gt;\\Microsoft office\\office15&gt;cscript ospp.vbs \/unpkey:\u201cLast 5 of installed product key\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0For example:<strong>\u00a0C:\\program files &lt;x86&gt;\\Microsoft office\\office15&gt;cscript ospp.vbs \/unpkey:WB222\u00a0<\/strong>(See Below) Repeat\u00a0the step above if necessary\u00a0until all keys are removed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-159\" src=\"http:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"654\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2.jpg 654w, https:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-300x131.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 654px) 100vw, 654px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After running\u00a0the \/unpkey: command line you will see a \u201cProduct Key uninstall successful\u201d message. You can now close the Command Prompt and move onto Step 2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove cached identities in the registry.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>In the Registry Editor navigate to\u00a0<\/em><em><strong>HKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\15.0 or 16.0\\Common\\Identity\\Identities<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0and remove all of the identities\u00a0under\u00a0\\Identities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: If using Shared Computer Licensing remove the above Identities from HKEYUsers\\SID.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove stored credentials in Credential Manager.<\/strong>\n<p>A. Open\u00a0<strong>Control Panel &gt; Credential Manager<\/strong>. \u00a0Remove all Windows credentials listed for Office15 or Office16.<\/p>\n<p>B. To remove the Credential Click on the Drop down arrow and choose Remove from Vault.(See Below)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-160\" src=\"http:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/3.jpg 635w, https:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/3-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Shared Computer Licensing<\/strong>\u00a0scenarios you must remove the Token and identities listed below.<br \/>\n%userprofile%\\Appdata\\local\\Microsoft\\Office\\15.0 or 16.0\\Licensing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manually cleanup specific folders.<\/strong>\n<p>Credential Manager:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Appdata\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Credentials<br \/>\nAppdata\\Local\\Microsoft\\Credentials<br \/>\nAppdata\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Protect<br \/>\nHKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Protected Storage System Provider<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Office 365 activation Tokens and Identity<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Appdata\\local\\Microsoft\\Office\\15.0 or 16.0\\Licensing<br \/>\nHKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\15.0 or 16.0\\Common\\Identity<br \/>\nHKEYU\\(The Users SID)\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\15.0 or 16.0\\Common\\Identity<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The above steps will be reset to the activation state for Office 365(2013\/2016).\u00a0The activation flow after the locations are cleared will represent an initial activation scenario.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>TL;DR ? Download <a href=\"http:\/\/zupertails.be\/wur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/OLicenseCleanup.vbs_1.txt\">OLicenseCleanup.vbs_1<\/a>\u00a0, rename to a .VBS file (by removing the .TXT extension, why am I even saying this.
